Air compressor does not start? Five reasons and troubleshooting methods
As a common equipment in industry and manufacturing, air compressors may cause production stagnation once they cannot start, which in turn affects the production efficiency and economic benefits of the enterprise. This article will analyze the five common reasons why air compressors cannot start, and provide effective troubleshooting methods to help you quickly restore the normal operation of the equipment.
Reason 1: Power problem
Possible reasons:
- The power supply is not connected
- The fuse is blown or the circuit is disconnected
- The voltage is unstable or too low
Troubleshooting methods:
- Check the power supply: Make sure that the power plug and socket of the air compressor are well connected and the power is turned on.
- Check the fuse: Check whether the fuse on the electrical control panel of the compressor is blown. If it is blown, it needs to be replaced.
- Check the voltage: Use a voltmeter to check whether the power supply voltage is normal. If the voltage is too low or unstable, you can contact the power company or add a voltage stabilizing device.
Reason 2: Motor failure
Possible causes:
- Motor damage
- Motor overload protection triggered
- Start capacitor failure
Troubleshooting:
- Check the motor status: Use a multimeter to check whether the motor circuit is complete and check for signs of burning.
- Check overload protection: Many compressors are equipped with overload protection devices. Confirm whether the device is triggered. If so, manually reset the overload protector or let the motor cool down.
- Check the starting capacitor: If the motor's starting capacitor fails, it may cause difficulty in starting. Measure the capacitance value with a multimeter and replace the capacitor if necessary.
Reason 3: Control system failure

- Controller damage
- Start relay failure
- Sensor or switch failure
Troubleshooting:
- Check the control panel: Check whether the control panel has a fault indicator or error code, and read the operating manual for diagnosis.
- Check the starting relay: Make sure the starting relay is working properly. If the relay is damaged, the motor may not be started.
- Check sensors and switches: If the compressor is equipped with a pressure sensor or other safety switches, confirm that they are not faulty or stuck.
Reason 4: Safety protection device starts protection
Possible reasons:
- Pressure is too high or too low
- Moisture accumulation causes short circuit
- Protection device is too sensitive
Troubleshooting method:
- Check the pressure switch: Make sure the pressure switch of the compressor is working properly. Too high or too low pressure may trigger the safety protection system and prevent startup.
- Check moisture accumulation: If there is too much moisture in the air system, it may cause an electrical short circuit. Check and drain condensed water.
- Check the protection device: Some models of compressors are equipped with protection devices. Make sure these devices are not triggered by mistake.
Reason 5: Start circuit problem
Possible reasons:
- Loose cables or wiring
- Contactor failure
- Circuit board failure
Troubleshooting method:
- Check the cables and wiring: Make sure all connecting cables are firm and not loose or disconnected.
